To include members who couldn’t join us in person, we hosted a Winter Gathering on Zoom. A total of 28 BHS members attended the online meeting.

—Haiku Sharing Session: Exploring Seasonality

The session brought together BHS members from near and far for an inspiring afternoon on Zoom. The participants were invited to reflect on the rhythms of nature and change—central themes that lie at the heart of haiku.

To open the event, attendees were invited to share two things people might not know about them. This light-hearted activity set a warm and friendly tone, helping everyone to feel more connected and at ease before moving into the poetry discussions.

The workshop began with a cordial welcome and an introduction to the theme of seasonality by Iliyana Stoyanova, encouraging everyone to think about how different times of year evoke varied emotions, imagery, and creative expression:
– How does the choice of season (or kigo) influence the emotional tone and imagery of a haiku?
– In what ways can contemporary haiku express seasonality without relying on traditional kigo lists?
– How can small, concrete seasonal details suggest larger themes like change, time, or renewal?

Participants then moved into small breakout groups of four to five, where they shared and discussed two haiku of their choice—either their own compositions or favourite pieces by other poets. The intimate setting allowed for meaningful exchanges, thoughtful reflection, and discovery of new perspectives.

After half an hour of lively conversation, everyone returned to the plenary room to share insights and highlights from their discussions. The atmosphere was open, friendly, and full of thoughtful energy, with participants expressing how much they valued the chance to connect through creative expression and seasonal awareness.

Overall, the event offered a space of warmth and community—where poets of all levels celebrated the beauty of the seasons through the mindful power of haiku.
